LIVING TEACHERS— ANCIENT TEACHINGS
KNOW THYSELF
The Awakened are few
and hard to find.
- The Buddha
So awake, reflect, watch,
work with care and attention
live in the way
and the light will grow in you.
- The Buddha
Knowledge of god gives love
knowledge of self gives humility
- Mother Theresa

We are what we think.
All that we are,
arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts,
we make the world.
- the Buddha
THE LAW OF RESONANCE:
That which is above is like That which is below
That which is below is like That which is above
THE LAW OF RETURN
What one puts out comes back
Action and equal but opposite reaction
Hate never dispelled hate. Only love dispels hate. This is the law, ancient and inexhaustible.
- the Buddha
DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD DO UNTO YOURSELF
Prayer is for the soul, what food is for the body. The blessing of one prayer lasts until the next, just as the strength from one meal, lasts till the one after.
- Jewish Proverb
THIS TOO WILL PASS
NOTHING IS AS IT APPEARS
Living things are without number: I vow to row them to the other shore.
Defilements are without number: I vow to remove them from myself.
The teachings are immeasurable: I vow to study and practice them.
The way is very long: I vow to arrive at the end.
- Four Vows of the Boddhisattva
The cause of the tree is the fruit. - Rumi
O thou who art
at home deep in my heart
enable me to join you
deep in my heart. - The Talmud |
My joy is like spring, so warm it makes
flowers bloom in all walks of life.
My pain is like a river of tears, so full it
fills up the four oceans.
Please call me by my true names,
so I can hear all my cries and my laughs at once,
so I can see that my joy and pain are one.
Please call me by my true names,
so I can wake up,
and so the door of my heart can be left open,
the door of compassion.
-Thich Naht Hahn |
O hidden life! Vibrant in every atom;
O hidden light! Shining in every creature;
O hidden love! Embracing all Oneness;
May each who feels himself as one with Thee,
Know he is also one with every other. - Annie Besant

Who am I?
The gross body, which is composed of the seven humors (dhătus), I am not; the five cognitive sense organs, i.e., the senses of hearing, touch, sight, taste, and smell, which apprehend their respective objects, i.e., sound, touch, color, taste, and odor, I am not; the five conative sense organs, i.e., the organs of speech, locomotion, grasping, excretion, and procreation, which have as their respective functions speaking, moving, grasping, excreting and enjoying, I am not; the five vital airs, prăna, etc., which perform respectively the five functions of in-breathing, etc., I am not; even the mind which thinks, I am not; the nescience too, which is endowed only with the residual impressions of objects, and in which there are no objects and no functions, I am not.
If I am none of these, then who am I?
After negating all of the above-mentioned as “not this, not this,” that Awareness which alone remains —
that I am.
-Ramana Maharshi |
Be still and know that
I am God.
|
In Samadhi there is only the feeling “I am”,
and no thoughts.
The experience, “I am”, is being still.
-Ramana Maharshi
|
Life is real only then, when “I am.”
-Gurdjieff

O Lord, Thou art on the sandbanks, As well as in the midst of the current; I bow to Thee.
Thou art in the pebbles, As well as in the calm expanse of the sea, I bow to Thee.
O all-pervading Lord, Thou art in the barren soil, And in the crowded places; I bow to Thee.
- ‘Sukla Yajur, Veda XVI
In prayer, come empty, do nothing.
-St. John of the Cross
